The Next Version
Version 7 (Release Date: TBD)
This version is anticipated to cover some of the other BBS types like
PCBoard and how to set up the Front End loaders. We also plan to give
some explanation to the Setup of RBBSMAIL for those who want their
messages in RBBS Conference message bases. Version 7 will also cover
the new releases of BinkleyTerm 2.1 and Amax 2.1

-------------------------------------
* The most major change in this version is that I have begun to write an
OPERATING PROCEDURES manual that will be part of this document called
OPERATE.PRN. SetUp docs will be in SETUP.PRN. This has been brought to
light due to the fact that after someone has followed these DOCS to setup
their Netmail operation, they still had only a very vague notion of what
was going on and how to operate on a daily basis. This document will
attempt to explain the basic netmail operation and maintenance procedures
that a Sysop would need on his system It is NOT intended to bypass the
need to thoroughly read the manuals for each of the programs but to give
the Sysop a "quick boost" to get him up to sufficient speed to make his
initial experience a good one. In fact, if YOU don't read the program
manuals, its highly unlikely that you will ever become proficient in the
use of this NetMail system.
*Most of the support files I have packaged here are now heavily commented.
Take CAREFUL note in the docs as some of the files will not work if the
comments are left in them.!
* Many sections have been moved from previous versions to organize similar
programs together. I have also had comments from several persons that
they thought they needed ALL the programs mentioned in these docs in order
to implement NetMail. I now have added a list of the minimum requirements
needed and clearly shown what programs do the same as others and what
programs are optional utilities that may be added at a later date at the
Sysops discretion. I have also noted which programs I am using on this BBS
as those are the ones I'm most familiar with and can provide the most
support.
* Another request from users was to package the files in the archive by
where they are to be used, such as the root directory, the binkley
directory, the RBBS directory, etc. Therefore, we have implemented that.
Following the docs, you will deARC the programs in the proper directories
and then deARC the files with this doc to avoid overwriting the custom
control files here with the generic ones that come with the various
programs. NOTE: This is important! I've had entirely too many people call
me and tell me the setup didn't work at all, only to find out that they
deARCed the program's default configurations over the custom designed ones
with the setup docs. I know it sounds silly, but almost 20% of the users
have done this so far.
* This version encompasses a major rewrite for several sections, notably
in the BINKLEY.BAT method of loading the BBS system. We have returned to
the BBSBatch method as in the original DOCs. This was done due to its
ease in providing the RELIABLE Connect parameter to RBBS and the fact that
the "Time Until Event Parameter" works correctly in RBBS 17.1C.
* Due to many requests, we have totally redone the BINKLEY.EVT file to add
many comments to show what is occurring during the events more clearly.
* SmlNet1D has been released and has several different options in its
configuration setup from previous versions. This is the only mail reader
described in detail in these docs although several others are mentioned.
* RBBSPACK 2.51 is available which supplements the majority of the
functions of OMMM and allows addressing messages to multiple zones. I
have successfully implemented it on my BBS and recommend it for all mail
systems even if they are not multi-networking (RBBS-NET, FIDONet,
AlterNet, etc.).
* OMMM v 1.3 and then 1.4 were released. OMMM is now fully zone aware.
The biggest plus in the new versions is the first issue of FULL DOCS!
NOTE: In this setup, my use of OMMM is only partial and most of the work
is done by RBBSPACK.
* This BBS replaced the UARTs on its Serial Comm Ports with the higher
speed NS16550AN UART. This allows us to increase the transfer rate of
data significantly through locking the FOSSIL at 19200 baud as well as
locking RBBS at 19200 Baud. Prior to this, an HST 9600 baud connect
yielded approximately 930cps in a long transfer. With this upgrade, I now
achieve over 1100 cps. This upgrade is definitely worth performing on any
machine with at least a 10MHz clock speed, even if you only have a 2400
baud modem. (A speed improvement of 15% can usually be reached). If you
have a 9600 baud modem, you can see substantial improvement in performance
even with a PC at 4.77 MHz clock speed. This doc covers the procedure on
locking the FOSSIL (OPUSCOMM in my case), locking RBBS, and reconfiguring
BINKLEY, and setting up the new NRAM parameters in the HST modem.
NOTE: As I was ready to release this version , U. S. Robotics unveiled
their new Dual Standard and HST 14400 series modems. Thanks to the
testing and research done by many others, I am able to incorporate those
settings into these docs also.
* Several Sysop Utilities have been developed (or updated) that I am now
using on my BBS, so I have included them in the documentation.
* EchoStat has been implemented to monitor incoming messages and to create
bulletins showing daily and weekly message traffic. This is important to a
HOST, but is also good information to let you know how active your
conferences are and if all of a sudden activity changes from normal.
* AreaFix v 1.10 has been updated with several new features. It is not
necessary for a net to run this, but it is highly recommended to a HOST.
Much of the information on AreaFix that is in the current docs has now
been moved to the OPERATE.PRN file since the average person receiving mail
does not need to have the AREAFIX program, but just needs to know how to
activate its features at his HOST. A very good AREAFIX User file is now
included with the program itself and has been included with these docs as
a help to the user.
* Amax 2.0 also was released with many new features. Expanded discussion
of AMAX is now in the documentation.
* ParseList version 1.3 was released with several new features. The
PARSELST.CFG file that comes with this package now has several more
comments added to help in configuring your own system.
* I have begun using the DayNumber program on my own BBS to help out with
maintenance by identifying the Julian Date that something was processed
and then to copy it off to an archive area. This is a new entry in the
Binkley.bat file that I have provided. I have setup a simple batch file to
display what can be done with this program by copying the daily
Binkley.log file to an archive directory and renaming it according to its
Julian date to allow you to have a record of calls by date.

Version 5 - Released (12/1/88)
This release should cover changes required to the various files to
implement RBBS 17.1A & B as well as updates to the SmlNet NetMail Editor
Door. Several members of the RBBS-NET are currently writing the code for a
program that will take the place of OMMM and will be specifically for this
network and be zone aware. This program is called RBBSPACK. The file is
available but this document does not cover its operation. As soon as it
is ready to totally replace OMMM, we will replace OMMM in the docs with
RBBSPACK.
* At this writing the current revision level of the various NetMail
programs need for this procedure as used in this documentation is
as follows:
Required Programs:
BinkleyTerm - BEXE_200.ZIP
Parselist - PLST_120.ZIP (Parselist 1.30 will be released soon)
QSORT - QSORT30.ZIP
ConfMail - CONF_400.ZIP
OPUSCOM - OCOMM_530.ZIP or X00v111b.ZIP
VFOSSIL - VIBM_110.ZIP
OMMM - OMMM_107.ZIP
RENUM - RENUM410.ZIP
ReplyLnk - REPLYLNK.ZIP
Netmail Readers/Editors
Mail Editor - NED 1.0 Offline program for local sysop
Mail Editor - SmlNet.ZIP 1C - RBBS Door for ONline and Offline work.
OPTIONAL Program
Areafix - AREAFX11.ZIP (You don't need this program to use this feature)
Corrections to PARSELST.CFG & BINKLEY.EVT to allow local dialing were added.

Version 4A - 10/15/88
* MAINTENANCE RELEASE
Thanks to Michael Henderson for helping to locate the errors in this
documentation.
This version has been prepared to correct errors in the documentation
concerning OMMM and its packing operation. A correction to the OMMM.CTL
file has been added as a result of discussions with Michael Henderson. We
also have added a section on the discussion of the ARC2PK.ZIP conversion
program that allows you to use PKARC with OMMM instead of the hardcoded
ARCA.
Changes have also been made to the BINKLEY.CFG, PARSELST.CFG, and
AREAFIX.CTL files for the purpose of changing the RBBS-NET over to Zone 8.
This will smooth some of the inter-relationships with the FIDONET network.
==========================================================================
Version 4 - 9/15/88
* SECOND PUBLIC RELEASE VERSION
This version was put out as a result of input from Andy Jones,
Terri Rossi, Rod Bowman, and some of the sysops (Darwin Collins,
Marc Nowell) in my Net in regards to errors, shortcomings, and
areas that needed improvement in clarity. It also documents changes
due to major new releases of the key NetMail programs.
* The original intent of this document has been altered and now
only covers information necessary to the new NetMail sysop and not
for those planning to be HOSTS.
* Addition of LEAST COST SCHEDULING controls to PARSELIST to
control LD calling during "cheap call rate" periods.
* An increase in the TimeOut in BINKLEY.CFG to 45 was added as a
result of the difficulty of some OPUS BBS's to respond in the 20
seconds originally allowed.
* Due to the implementation of passwording in Netmail accessing on
the RBBS Mail network, we have changed from using XLATLIST &
OPUSNODE to PARSELIST.
* AREAFIX is now covered in this doc. This will allow you to
verify what echos you are supposed to be receiving and make it
easier to add/delete echos. It also will allow you to request a
current list of the available echos on the network.
* SmlNet door by Darwin Collins is now in BETA test and can be
FREQ'd from 930/5 at this time. This covers a simple setup
procedure. NOTE that the final version of this program will be in
a shareware and a commercial software form similar to SIDROIDS.
Full documentation of this package can be obtained in the program
itself as setup is rather simple.
* The new version of CONFMAIL (4.0) is smaller and much faster and
uses much less memory that the 3.31 covered by the earlier docs.
However this version does not provide for the RENUM and DELETE by
date functions that the earlier version did. It will be necessary
to use other programs to do those functions if 4.0 is used. This
document now covers RENUM410 and Replylnk that take care of those
functions much faster than ConfMail did and still allows ConfMail
4.0 to "Scan" and "Toss" the mail.
If you are currently using the earlier version of ConfMail, it is
possible to use it by changing its name to something else and
altering its name in the binkley.bat to do the RENUM and MAINT
functions and allowing the new ConfMail to do the Importing and
Exporting of mail.
